It was on Dec 1, 2005 that I got bad news from my doctor. I was 70 lbs overweight (which is ALOT for a 5’2″ guy). I was also diagnosed with Fatty Liver Disease, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, pre diabetes, metabolic syndrome, & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. No wonder I was sick all the time and constantly exhausted. This was all caused by a bad diet and lack of exercise.

If I continued in my unhealthy ways, I was on the verge of having very serious health/medical problems. Thus, these medical reports were my “Wake Up Call”. I walked out of that doctor’s office with a decision to start exercising and eating healthier. Little did I know what was going to happen to my life. Through much prayer, research on nutrition/health, and the help of certain individuals, I lost 70 lbs (almost 40% of my body weight) in one year’s time through diet & exercise. The beginning of that journey was 10 years ago. All of the health problems I listed above vanished during the year of weight loss, and I felt better than I had in my entire life. Thankfully, I have kept most of the weight off ever since. I guess this is something significant because the experts say that 95% of those that lose weight, gain it back and then some…

It was during that year of weight loss that I fell in love with Running. So much so, that I completed my 25th Marathon last month. You should know that I am not that fast of a runner, so I won’t place in the top echelon of most races. However, I like how it makes me feel and how it has helped me to lose weight & maintain that weight loss. So I continue to run.

There are times throughout the last 10 years that I thought I wasn’t going to make it. I can’t tell you how many times I failed. But I got back up. Surprisingly, there were also times it was easy. It still sounds strange to be called a fit or healthy person. But I guess after 10 years of practicing this lifestyle and keeping the weight off, it shouldn’t surprise me any longer…

I want to be an encouragement and inspiration here. If I can do it, anyone can do it. Nobody loves food more than I do. So if I can lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off, so can you. You don’t have to become a distance runner to do it. The key is being consistent! I have made eating healthy and exercising a Lifestyle. Don’t lose hope. It is never too late to begin exercising and eating healthier. So you can do it!!!
