Tips on How to Prevent Tarnish on Sterling Silver Jewelry
Tarnish can appear as discoloration or as a blackish residue due to skin oils, air pollution, contaminants and or oxidation from air. This is due to the mixed alloys in Sterling silver that make it wearable. Silver has to have other alloys as 100% sterling silver would be too soft and not usable.
To prevent oxidation, store your jewelry in a fabric pouch or plastic baggie, sealed tight from air.
It is also recommended to avoid dipping your jewelry in dipping solutions or commercial cleaning solutions even though it may say it is for sterling silver. Dip cleaners may appear to work initially but will eventually strip and discolor the shine and patina of sterling silver.
Containers for Silver Storage
A container that locks out air is preferable, since reducing contact with air will slow corrosion. The most common household items with this function are zip lock bags, or any other air tight bag with non-abrasive surfaces, such as those made of polyethylene or Mylar. Avoid polyvinyl plastic bags however, as they have chemical compounds that promote tarnishing.
How to care for your Jewelry
In order to preserve your jewelry be sure to always keep it clean and dry. For the longest lasting look it’s best to remove it before swimming, bathing or applying cosmetics or perfume. All silver will tarnish over time and exposure to moisture will accelerate this process . Storing in individual zip lock bags will help protect your jewelry.
